Social Media, Identity, and Climate Change: The Transformative Power of Online Interactions

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of identity construction in social media environments and the impact of these processes on climate change awareness within a theoretical framework. With the advent of digitalisation, individuals’ modes of communication, sense of belonging, and practices of social participation have undergone profound transformations. Social media has emerged not merely as a medium for information sharing but as a multilayered public sphere in which identities, values, and notions of environmental responsibility are produced. In this context, the study relates the role of social media platforms in the formation of individual and collective identities to the effects of online interactions on climate action. The examination of identity through its representations on social media reveals how individuals strategically construct their self-presentations in digital spaces and how these presentations intersect with social values. Moreover, the circulation of climate change discourses on social media contributes to the transformation of climate awareness from individual sensitivity to collective consciousness. In this regard, the study adopts a holistic perspective on the interaction among social media, identity, and climate change, discussing the transformative influence of digital culture on attitudes toward climate change. The research is structured as a literature review and analyses how social media shapes identity formation through the dimensions of credibility, persuasiveness, and mobilisation. In conclusion, it emphasises that social media creates a sphere of social interaction that integrates individual identity presentations with collective environmental awareness and strengthens digital citizenship practices in the fight against climate change.
