An Examination of the Attitudes of Pre-Service Science Teachers Toward Media Literacy

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes of pre-service science teachers toward media literacy and to determine whether these attitudes differ according to demographic variables such as gender, age, and grade level. The research was conducted using the survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The sample of the study consists of a total of 406 pre-service teachers studying in Science Education programs at different universities in Türkiye. The data were collected through the “Media Literacy Attitude Scale” developed by Özsevgeç and Okur (2009). The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package program; descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied. Findings of the study indicate that pre-service science teachers generally have a high level of positive attitudes toward media literacy. High mean scores were particularly obtained in the sub-dimensions of “use of technology” and “use of information.” While no significant difference was found in terms of gender, statistically significant differences were identified in some sub-dimensions depending on age and grade level. The results indicate that media literacy is influenced by variables such as age and grade level and may develop differently across various dimensions throughout the teacher education process. Accordingly, it is recommended that practices related to media literacy be increased within teacher education programs.
