CORY ARCANGEL'S VİRTUAL UNİVERSES

Abstract

After the use of tools such as cameras and television as an art form in the 1960s, in the 1990s we see New Media being incorporated into art practices as tools and media. These tools and media produced with digital or digital technology turn into a material for artists. The current point is a continuation of the search for alternative spaces and materials that started in the 20th century. Interactive media such as computers, the internet and virtual reality o#er new experiences for the artist and the viewer, who has now become the user. The artist makes the user a part of the work. The user completes the work by interacting with it. In this way, both the artist and the user expend mental and physical energy. The user has to move from a passive to a dynamic state.
Some artists appropriates existing virtual environments by manipulating them, as in ‘Video Game Art’. This method is similar to the works of video art artist Nam June Raik, who plays with the mechanism of television. In this context, Cory Açangel, one of the important names of Video Game Art, and his art will be the subject of this research study.

CORY ARCANGEL'IN SANAL EVRENLERİ

Abstract

1960’lı yıllarda kamera ve televizyon gibi araçların bir sanat formu olarak kullanılmasından sonra 1990’larda Yeni Medyanın araç ve ortam olarak sanat pratiklerine dahil edildiğini görüyoruz. Sayısal ya da dijital teknolojiyle üretilen bu araç ve ortamlar sanatçılar için bir malzemeye dönüşür. Gelinen nokta ise 20. Yüzyılla başlayan alternatif mekân ve malzeme arayışının bir devamıdır. Bilgisayar, internet ve sanal gerçeklik gibi etkileşim ortamları sanatçı ve artık kullanıcıya dönüşen izleyici açısından yeni deneyimler sunar. Sanatçı, kullanıcıyı yapıtın bir parçası haline getirir. Kullanıcı ise yapıtla etkileşime girerek onu tamamlar. Bu sayede hem sanatçı hem de kullanıcı zihinsel ve fiziksel enerji harcar. Kullanıcı pasif halden dinamik hale geçmek durumunda kalır.
Kimi sanatçılar ise ‘Video Oyun Sanatı’nda olduğu gibi mevcut sanal ortamları manipülasyona uğratarak temellük eder. Bu yöntem video art sanatçısı Nam June Paik’in televizyonun mekanizmasıyla oynadığı çalışmalarıyla benzerlik gösterir. Bu bağlamda Video Oyun Sanatının önemli isimlerinden Cory Arcangel ve onun sanatı bu araştırma çalışmasının konusu olacaktır.
