News, Politics and International Relations: The French Press's Perspective on the Turkey-Syria Crisis

Abstract

This study examines how the Turkey-Syria crisis is represented in the French print media. The study covers the developments between February and March 2020 and was conducted through a content analysis of three leading French newspapers, Le Monde, Le Figaro, and Libération. The study's primary purpose is to analyze the attitude of the French press towards Turkey's Syria policy and the migrant crisis and to reveal how this attitude is shaped within the framework of international newsworthiness criteria. The positive, negative, and neutral tones of the news were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method. According to the findings obtained as a result of the analysis, it can be said that the French press generally exhibited a critical approach towards Turkey's Syria policy and characterized Turkey as “blackmail” and “threat,” especially in the context of the migrant crisis. While Le Figaro gave more coverage to the crisis due to its stance close to the government, Libération used a more balanced language. On the other hand, Le Monde displayed an attitude reflecting the perspective of the leftist opposition. The use of visuals in the news is intense, and military content and migrants are at the forefront, especially in negative news. As a result, the Turkish-Syrian crisis was covered in the French press on the axis of France's regional interests and the migration issue, and newsworthiness criteria and political affinities were reflected in the news. This study emphasizes the importance of political influences and media representations in international news flow. Therefore, in selecting the news in the international press, the concept of news value constituted the theoretical concept of this study.
