Lewis Mumford is a renowned scholar worked in various disciplines and chiefly known for his works in urban studies and technology history fields. Mumford’s contributions to technology-based communication studies is a disregarded/understudied subject. In particular, Mumford’s ecological-based urban studies have enabled the establishment of an analogy in the context of the dealing the media studies with the approach of examining the media as environment in the tradition of media ecology. Examining the city as a medium and the media as a medium has produced similar approaches. Mumford's study of the history of technology has influenced various media studies scholars such as Harold Innis and Marshall McLuhan. In accordance with the parallels between changes in the media ecosystem and the human mind, Mumford’s studies paved the way for them to create a technology and communication era. Through Lewis Mumford’s studies, this study discusses Lewis Mumford's contributions to communication and media studies.
